‘’Mathematics Is the science which uses easy words for hard ideas’’

Edward Kanser.

An information- and technology-based society requires individuals, who are

able to think critically about complex issues, analyze and adapt to new

situations, solve problems of various kinds and communicate their thinking

effectively. The study of mathematics equips students with knowledge, skills

and habits of mind that are essential for successful and rewarding participation

in such a society. The more the technology is developed the greater the level of

mathematical skill is required.

The Whole mathematics course is comprised of the following strands

  • Number sense, properties, and operations.
  • Geometry
  • Data analysis, statistics, and probability.
  • Algebra and functions.

In Numbers and Operation students will understand, Identify different types of set with notations. Identify and compare integers, rational and irrational numbers. Apply basic operations on integers and rational numbers and verify commutative, associative and distributive properties. Find HCF and LCM of two or more numbers using division and prime factorization. Solve problems on ratio, proportion, profit, loss, taxes, insurance and money exchange.

In Algebra students will understand, identify algebraic expressions, apply four basic operations on polynomials and solve linear equations having one variable.

In Geometry student will apply appropriate formulas to find area and volume of circular regions, Draw and subdivide a line segment and an angle and, apply properties of lines, angles and triangles to develop arguments about their geometric relationships. Find unknown angles of different shapes. Etc.

In Information Handling student will collect and organize data, distinguish between group and un-group data, read, display and interpret bar and pie graphs.

In Reasoning and Logical thinking student will find different ways of approaching a problem to develop logical thinking and explain their reasoning, solve problems using mathematical relationships and present results in an organized way and, construct and communicate convincing arguments for geometric situations.
